Daily checks without the HGV baggage
Vans under 3.5 tonnes sit outside operator licensing, but they do not sit outside the law: roadworthiness, insurance conditions and health and safety duties all still apply, and DVSA stops vans in numbers at the roadside. The mistake we see is fleets handing van drivers a 60 item HGV form, which gets ignored by week two. Are daily checks a legal requirement for vans?
There is no O licence obligation below 3.5 tonnes, but the vehicle must be roadworthy every time it is used, and employers have a duty to manage work related road risk. A signed van walkaround record is the practical way to evidence both.
What is the grey fleet version for?
Employees driving their own cars or vans on business. It records that the vehicle is taxed, insured for business use, within MOT and in sound condition, which protects the company as well as the driver.
